Ferroelectric Smectic Liquid Crystals as Electrocaloric Materials

چکیده
The 1980s saw the development of ferroelectric chiral smectic C (SmC*) liquid crystals (FLCs) with a clear focus on their application in fast electro-optic devices. However, as only known fluid materials, they also have potential other applications, one which is heat-exchange devices based electrocaloric effect. In particular, can be both material and heat exchanging an device, significantly simplifying some design constraints associated solid dielectrics. this paper, we consider three SmC* crystal systems, two are pure materials that exhibit ferroelectric, antiferroelectric, intermediate phases was developed room-temperature for applications. We report field-induced temperature changes these selected measured indirectly using Maxwell method. maximum induced change determined, 0.37 K, currently record-breaking FLC sufficiently large to make interesting candidates Using normalised function electric field strength, merit, performances FLCs compared ceramics polymers.

Ferroelectric ordering and electroclinic effect in chiral smectic liquid crystals.
Ferroelectric ordering, the electroclinic effect, and chiral smectic C(SmC*)-smectic A phase transitions in thin planar ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) cells are studied by means of linear electro-optic and second harmonic generation (SHG) techniques. The ferroelectric switching is detected in biased FLC cells by measuring azimuthal dependences of linear and nonlinear responses. The applied ...

Nematic fluids with polar order could be most useful new molecular materials. However, such ferroelectric liquid crystals have not been observed as yet. This paper describes the first computer simulations of a ferroelectric nematic phase made from simple tapered particles as shown in the picture and gives some hints about the relevant molecular features.

Abstract. Smectic liquid crystals are materials formed by stacking deformable, fluid layers. Though smectics prefer to have flat, uniformly-spaced layers, boundary conditions can impose curvature on the layers. Since the layer spacing and curvature are intertwined, the problem of finding minimal configurations for the layers becomes highly nontrivial. We discuss various topological and geometri...

2014 A general symmetry argument is presented, and experiments on newly synthesized p-decyloxybenzylidene p’-amino 2-methyl butyl cinnamate are described, demonstrating that chiral smectic C and H liquid crystals are ferroelectric. Some of the properties of this new class of ferroelectrics are discussed. In spite of speculation on the possibility of ferroelectric liquid crystalline phases [1], ...

Twist-grain-boundary phases in smectics are the geometrical analogs of the Abrikosov flux lattice in superconductors. At large twist angles, the nonlinear elasticity is important in evaluating their energetics. We analytically construct the height function of a pi2 twist-grain-boundary phase in smectic-A liquid crystals, known as Schnerk's first surface. This construction, utilizing elliptic fu...
